Take the last seat Not at the head Then you might get the best seat instead Do not try to Enter by force Only He can open the doors Sometimes I think that What I deserve is A badge for 20 years of service I’m no better Than the next guy Before the throne of the Most High Oh, Deny Yourself Deny Yourself, Oh Deny Yourself, Ohh If you have any You must give some Maybe even half your income Why hold on to What is not mine? Treasures are worth more once I die Bodies will age Treasures will rust I am only spirit-filled dust An empty vessel Used by the Lord, A note within his heavenly chord Oh, Deny Yourself Deny Yourself, Oh Deny Yourself, Ohh The first will not last The last will not thirst Although the world sees it in reverse The Tower of Babel stands While I’m on the ground But Jesus turns this world upside down The cross before me Some ignored it But I am called to walk toward it Only broken Ones can learn it The best leader is a servant Oh, Deny Yourself Deny Yourself, Oh Deny Yourself, Ohh Oh, If you love your life You’re really killing it, Oh If you give your life You’ll be fulfilling it Oh, Deny Yourself Take up a cross each day, Oh And follow him, Ohh Ohh Ohh Oh, Deny Yourself Deny Yourself, Oh Deny Yourself, Ohh

Forgive Me 04:16
You pick me up every time I fall You set me back on my way You’re faithful, I’m grateful, but I hate most of all That I will fall the next day Why do I do what I do? Do I enjoy being lost? Each time I come back to you, I see you there on a cross Forgive me, forgive me, forgive me for I have sinned Forgive me, forgive me, forgive me for I have sinned Forgive me, forgive me, forgive me one more time, ohhh I know that I am a fallen man And all my sins are atoned I know that, in heaven, I can live perfectly But till I get there, I won’t But till I get there, I won’t No matter how low I go, there’s nothing you can’t make clean Heaven above, earth below, I live somewhere in between Forgive me, forgive me, forgive me for I have sinned Forgive me, forgive me, forgive me for I have sinned Forgive me, forgive me, forgive me one more time, ohhh Do I know what I want, do I know what I want, do I even know? Do I know who I am, do I know who I am, do I even know? Do I know what I want, do I know what I want, do I even know? Do I know who I am, do I know who I am, do I even know? How could I ever believe, that I could do it alone? Oh Father, please set me free, from all this shame that I own Forgive me, forgive me, forgive me for I have sinned Forgive me, forgive me, forgive me for I have sinned Forgive me, forgive me, forgive me one more time, ohhh

Powder 03:49
My body is but powder that God compressed and animated A piece of chalk which, dragged along, leaves a sidewalk decorated With each new word He scrawls This nub of chalk grows small I keep moving faster, but there’s no need to hurry Don’t need to be a rasta to have no worries But I got places to go, people to see, Forgetting about the all-encompassing reality That God told his kids He would feed them and dress them But here I am just hoping that my song will impress them I’m insecure, cuz one of my greatest fears Is that my name will be forgotten in a hundred years But every day as I choose how my life will be filled I really gotta wonder whose kingdom I build Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, I’ll say it louder For thine is the kingdom, the glory, and the powder And as the final word is writ, I’ll look into eternity But if I choose to look behind, what triumphs will I see? Just powder, spread so thin throughout the land Arranged with wisdom by the author’s hand Just powder Just powder Just powder P-p-powder

The Harvest 03:30
He gave them gold from his own hand Wanting them to put it to work But one of them hid it in the sand For he feared his master’s return For the harvest is plentiful, and the workers are few And the Spirit is willing, are you? For the winepress is full of grapes, and the cotton is high And the Kingdom is coming, am I? It’s not too late for me to start And there’s always work to be done I have no choice but to do my part For this life is my only one For the harvest is plentiful, and the workers are few And the Spirit is willing, are you? For the winepress is full of grapes, and the cotton is high And the Kingdom is coming, am I? Don’t fall asleep, this world is hurt, Longing for the God that I claim I tell myself I must stay alert For all other work is in vain For the harvest is plentiful, and the workers are few And the Spirit is willing, are you? For the winepress is full of grapes, and the cotton is high And the Kingdom is coming, am I? When the master returns again in the unforeseen time, Other hands will be working, will mine? When the Kingdom has come at last, and the harvest is done, There are not many workers, am I one?

I love the world I love the things I buy I'll put 'em in my coffin so I'll have 'em when I die I love my car and my big TV Oh, I love the world and the world loves me

I'll Follow 03:47
I fill my bank, my closet, my fridge, my resume It all adds up to nothing I will not worship nothing I will not watch my foundation crumble and decay For God is my rock, I need nothing more My faith in the world has ended You, I’ll Follow you, I’ll Follow My disbelief I suspended You, I’ll Follow you I’m taking down all my fences You, I’ll Follow you, I’ll Follow I’ve counted all consequences You, I’ll Follow you I make my world look stable, but I put on a show What is my reputation? To hell with reputation I might as well come clean and let everybody know That I can’t walk straight, Jesus walks for me My faith in the world has ended You, I’ll Follow you, I’ll Follow My disbelief I suspended You, I’ll Follow you I’m taking down all my fences You, I’ll Follow you, I’ll Follow I’ve counted all consequences You, I’ll Follow you I walk through deadly valleys, but I am not afraid You lay the path before me You’ve walked this path before me Why should I fear when you’re here, a humble prayer away? With faith as my shield, evil can’t stop me My faith in the world has ended You, I’ll Follow you, I’ll Follow My disbelief I suspended You, I’ll Follow you I’m taking down all my fences You, I’ll Follow you, I’ll Follow I’ve counted all consequences You, I’ll Follow you And as I go, I still know the greatest mystery The God in heaven loves me When I was made he loved me When I disobey he loves me I’m free because he loves me My faith in the world has ended You, I’ll Follow you, I’ll Follow My disbelief I suspended You, I’ll Follow you I’m taking down all my fences You, I’ll Follow you, I’ll Follow I’ve counted all consequences You, I’ll Follow you

Every single day Every single problem I face There is one who’s rooting for me all the way Covering my failures with grace, so I say I’m not alone You told me I’m not alone You showed me I’m not alone anymore I won’t forget that My heart is known With you I’m closer to home Forever I’m not alone, I am yours "You don’t need to cry You don’t need to shed any tears Don’t you know I’m right by your side," Jesus said "Come to me and lay down your fears," so I say I’m not alone You told me I’m not alone You showed me I’m not alone anymore I won’t forget that My heart is known With you I’m closer to home Forever I’m not alone, I am yours When I am lost in the pouring rain (When I am lost, in the end) In the end your unfailing love (Your unfailing love) Will pour out again (Will pour out again) When I walk alone (When I walk alone) Darkness hiding me (I know) I know you walk beside me (There is one who walks beside me) I’m not alone You told me I’m not alone You showed me I’m not alone anymore I won’t forget that My heart is known With you I’m closer to home Forever I’m not alone, I am yours And even when I don’t see you, I’ll remember July in mid-December You promised me that it’s true I’ll tell myself that inside me and above me There is a God who loves me I’m not alone, I’m with you

Some wandered in the desert, finding no way To a city where they could lie They were hungry and thirsty, their lives ebbed away So they looked up into the sky Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble And he saved them from their distress He led them by a straight way to a city wall And he fed them and gave them rest Let them give thanks to the Lord for his great love And his wonderful deeds for men Some travelled on the waters, hoisting their sails Till the waves began to rise They were struck by a tempest, their courage failed Couldn’t anyone hear their cries? Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble And he saved them from their distress He sent away the stormclouds, calmed the mighty waves Till the whole ocean came to rest Let them give thanks to the Lord for his great love And his wonderful deeds for men Let the redeemed of the Lord say so (Say so, the redeemed of the Lord) [x4] Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble And he saved them from their distress The hurting ones find healing, hopeless ones find hope And the repentant ones are blessed Let us give thanks to the Lord for his great love And his wonderful deeds for men

Father God, you stitched me up inside my mother’s womb Planting every hair where it should go You engraved inside my heart the one thing I must do To love the God who made me and already loves me too You give me full life when I live life for you Father, I’m a sinful man, I do what I want to Trying hard to build up my own worth I could climb a thousand mountains and never get to you ‘Cuz when I follow me, I follow death, it’s sad but true Lord, it breaks your heart when I depart from you Lord, I love you, Jesus Lord, I love you ‘cause you first loved me Lord, I love you, Jesus Lord, I love you ‘cause you first loved me My first love Father God, you found a way to bring me home to you Only you can cross the gap I made Jesus came, he died, he rose, he went to heaven too Healing, teaching, loving, showing me what I should do He laid down his life so I could have life too Lord, I love you, Jesus Lord, I love you ‘cause you first loved me Lord, I love you, Jesus Lord, I love you ‘cause you first loved me My first love Father, I’m your child, I’ve chosen to believe in you All I want is what you want for me Come into my life and take control of what I do Love and undeserved forgiveness I receive from you And eternal life since I returned to you Lord, I love you, Jesus Lord, I love you ‘cause you first loved me Lord, I love you, Jesus Lord, I love you ‘cause you first loved me My first love My first love My first love My first love Lord, I love you, Jesus Lord, I love you ‘cause you first loved me Lord, I love you, Jesus Lord, I love you ‘cause you first loved me

about

Lent is the season from Ash Wednesday to Easter, modelling Jesus' long journey to his death and resurrection. One year, instead of giving up chocolate for Lent like I used to, I decided to set a goal to finish writing one song for each week until Easter. The number and complexity of the songs grew, splitting into a surprising range of genres, resulting in this, my rather eccentric debut album.

For me, Lent conjures up pictures of austerity and quiet self-reflection, as when Jesus wandered the wilderness for 40 days. Lent reminds me of the broken and temporary nature of this journey on earth, but also that Jesus journeys and suffers alongside us. Lent positions me on the difficult path to the cross, asking me if I’m willing to repent, humble myself, and follow Jesus to his death – trusting in the promise of reward on the other side of the suffering.

Here is my honest musical journey to the cross.
